Policy FAQs

Q

What is General Liability Coverage?

A

General Liability (GL) insurance, sometimes called small business insurance or commercial liability insurance, provides insurance coverage for your business against claims made by others including bodily injury, damage to property, or personal injury.

If someone comes to your place of business and is injured, a general liability policy could cover their medical costs. If someone else’s property is damaged and you are found to be responsible, the repair or replacement cost could be covered.

Q

Is General Liability Insurance required by law?

A

It depends on the state. Some states require, as a part of your licensing, for you to carry general liability insurance with specific limits. While your state might not require you to carry general liability, you customer or vendor contracts might require you to. Even in the absence of such requirements, it is highly recommended that all businesses carry general liability coverage.

Q

How much does general liability coverage cost?

A

Costs are determined based on various factors such as annual revenues, training programs, contracts, type of work and others. Under the Security America program, though, insureds save significant money through the various discount programs we have available including up to a 20% discount for members of the Electronic Security Associations.

Q

What is Errors & Omissions coverage?

A

Alarm professionals are expected to have extensive technical knowledge or training in their area of expertise. They are also expected to perform the services for which they were hired, according to the standards of conduct in their profession. If they fail to use the degree of skill expected of them, they can be held responsible in a court of law for any harm they cause to another person or business. When liability is limited to acts of negligence, professional liability insurance may be called “errors and omissions” liability.

Q

Why do I need to carry Errors & Omissions coverage if I have General Liability?

A

You need both policies to adequately protect your business. While both general liability and errors & omissions cover certain liabilities, they don’t cover the same liabilities. The reality is general liability excludes claims arising from professional services. These two policies work together to mitigate your expenses when accidents or oversights land you in a legal situation.

Q

How do I get Errors & Omissions coverage?

A

When you apply for insurance with Security America, Professional Liability coverage is included in our quotes. For the alarm industry, the area when general liability coverage applies versus when Errors & Omissions coverage applies can be gray. Having a policy that addresses both that is an occurrence-based policy is imperative.
